Aeronavele fără pilot la bord/dronele sunt din ce în ce mai prezente în cotidian, de la demonstrații de zbor, filmări de evenimente, cartografiere și utilizarea în agricultură până la livrare de mărfuri sau, în viitorul apropiat, transport de persoane. De asemenea, în toate serviciile militare au fost implementate sistemele de aeronave fără pilot la bord, de la micro-UA (Unmanned Aircraft) portabile la sisteme tactice de dimensiuni medii și aeronave fără pilot la bord de mari dimensiuni. Multitudinea de termeni folosiți pentru identificarea unui anumit tip de aeronavă poate crea confuzii și de aceea este necesară o clarificare a modului lor de folosire, avându-se, în același timp, în vedere respectarea egalității de gen și echitatea în limbaj.
