Abstract

This article examines the modern trends of radicalization and terrorism and researches the contemporary sources and methods of terrorist financing. The paper focuses on the emergence of new risks and threats to the European security system, such as the activity of “lone wolves” and small terrorist cells. The purpose of the publication is to study the financing mechanisms
of small independent terrorist organizational units and to propose measures against them.

Author Biography

Svetoslav YORDANOV, Rakovski National Defence College, Sofia

Svetoslav Yordanov is a Ph.D. Candidate at Land Forces Department, Command and Staff Faculty at Rakovski National Defence College in Sofia, Bulgaria. His scientific interests are in the field of countering radicalism, extremism and terrorism, countering the financing of terrorism, specialized methods and approaches for countering terrorism, security and defence.

He started his education and scientific work at doctoral program “Organization and Management outside the Sphere of Material Production (Security and Defense Management)”, in the field of higher education “Security and Defense”, professional direction “National Security”, in 2021 with an assigned dissertation topic “Countering the financing of terrorist activity on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria”. Svetoslav Yordanov is a main author of the quarterly information-analytical bulletin of the Research Centre for Extremism and Terrorism at Rakovski National Defence College. He is also an author of the articles “Financing of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria through illicit trade of antiquities” and “Typology of illicit sources of terrorist financing in the Sahel region”, published in the scientific journal “Security and Defense”, Vasil Levski National Military University Publishing Complex, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria.

Svetoslav Yordanov has a master degree in economics at the master's program “Economics of Defence and Security” with specialization “Corporate Security” at University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria. In 2018 he participated in two qualification courses at Rakovski National Defence College in the field of countering extremism and radicalization, and anti-corruption.
